According to USDA Forest Service:

"National Forests in North Carolina (NC)

Fall Color: Mostly green, some red and yellow

Recommended Viewing Routes: Along US 276 NC 215; and US 64 (Forest Heritage Byway); NC 261 near Roan Mountain, NC 143, TN 165, and Maple Springs Road (SR) 1127: Blue Ridge Parkway near Mt. Pisgah; NC 181 north to Jonas Ridge.

Estimated Peak Period: October 23 to November 5

Temperature: Lows: 42-55 degrees. Highs: 60-65 degrees
Remarks: Heading south from Asheville to Mt. Pisgah, drivers will see bits of orange and yellow on tulip poplars and lavender-purple on sourwoods and dogwoods at 3,000 feet.

In the mountainís higher elevations around 4,500 feet, maples are turning slightly red and orange while striped maple is changing to yellow. Black cherry and birch are showing yellow tinges.

Above 5,000 feet, mountain ash bushes are laden with bright red berries, adding to the fall color of golden rod and lavender asters.

About 70 miles east of Asheville in Caldwell County, the higher elevations of Wilson Creek around Mortimer are showing spots of color. To view the color, drive north on NC 181 to Jonas Ridge. "

Well, I am up for that too. Seems like only the motorcycle, S2000, and Miata crowd is doing the dragon... wonder why the euro folks don't run it.

But it is dangerous tho... people run off the road often. There was one video I saw of a S2000 that just flew off the road, good thing trees caught it before it fell too far and everyone was okay.

I would say you'd want to run it easy before you tackle it full speed. A little learning the road exercise can go a long way. People don't just fly off the road for no reason and I would dare say the person piloting the S2000 was going too fast w/o knowing the road. Don't worry Johnny! Laughing
BTW leafers, you can head up Boone way any time now for good viewing. There is a lot of color on my mountain now and will peak before long. Asheville is usually a couple weeks behind us.

Hopefully, I will get the thesis proposal out of the way before the weekend, spend Sunday in the lab... that should free up Monday for a run up in Boone or the Dragon. Very Happy

Dragon is a nice stretch of road, at times. Just can't treat it like a trackday or something.
